The UT Longhorns put on quite an exhibition Friday night, pasting Incarnate Word, 7-0, with six different players scoring, and four others supplying assists. The Horns open the regular season this weekend in the Outrigger Resorts Shootout in Honolulu – not too shabby – before opening the home schedule the next weekend, Aug. 29 & 31, against Arkansas (7:30pm, Friday) and Nevada (2pm, Sunday).

The Austin Aztex will hold their first USL PRO Invitational Camp Wed.-Fri., Oct. 1-3 at Kelly Reeves Athletics Complex. The three-day camp gives players a chance to join Austin's professional soccer team for the inaugural 2015 season and promises intense training and scrimmages led by the Aztex coaching staff, and Head Coach Paul Dalglish. There's no fee; players who want to be invited must fill out the online application form by Sept. 24.

The USA women went out of the U-20 Women's World Cup in the quarterfinals, losing 2-1 to North Korea. The semifinals are on as we go to press – N. Korea-Nigeria, France-Germany – with the final Sunday, Aug. 24.

The Euro Champions League playoff stage first leg matches were played this mid-week. The marquee game was Arsenal's tense scoreless draw at Besiktas; the return leg in London is on Fox Sports 1, Wed., Aug. 27, at 1:30pm... The English Premier League is under way; Manchester United losing at home to Swansea was the shocker of the first week... The Portland Timbers this week won the first CONCACAF Champions League group stage game ever played in Guyana, beating Alpha United, 4-1, in Georgetown.
