The Austin Aztex' big news this week was their announcement that they're going pro next year; see my story on that on p.30. And a World Cup preview.
Meanwhile, on the field, the Aztex extended their PDL Mid South Division lead on their two-game road trip to play the Mississippi Brilla, with a scoreless draw Thursday, followed up by what sounds like a pretty dominating 2-0 win on Saturday, with goals coming from Alesi Osorio and Andres Cuero. The Aztex are now 5-0-1 on the year, still the best record in the 64-team Premier Development League.
Next up: The Aztex host the second-place Laredo Heat (2-1-2) at 7:30pm Saturday, June 14 – the first of three games in 17 days against the Heat, a perennial fixture in the PDL post-season, and the only team that could still challenge the Aztex for the Mid South Division title. The Heat's record isn't that impressive, but they could be a tough nut to crack – they've allowed just two goals in their five games thus far.
