Aztex announce full coaching staff, and more
By Nick Barbaro, Fri., March 16, 2012
The Austin Aztex announced their full coaching staff on Friday: three assistants for PDL head coach Paul Dalglish, plus a head coach and three assistants for the Super-20 youth team. I have to think Chairman David Markley got the team he wanted; it's a deep, experienced, and very much Austin-centric crew – guys who are well-known and well-liked around Austin soccer circles.
The PDL assistants are Ben Crawley (Westlake High, Austin Sockadillos, Austin Lone Stars); Manuel Buentello (South Texas Olympic Development Program, with coaching and scouting ties across South Texas and Mexico); and goalkeeper coach David Winner (Aztex 1.0). The Super-20 head coach is Wolfgang Sühnholz, the dean of Austin coaches, with a résumé that runs from Bayern Munich through the NASL, the U-16 and U-20 U.S. national teams, and every serious soccer venture in Austin for the past 25 years. He'll be assisted by Beto Papandrea (the PDL Defender of the Year in 2008 for the Aztex, who also played with the Lone Stars and Lightning); Ron Dennie (Aztex); and goalkeeper coach Cory Honeyman (Lone Stars).
On the international scene, Bayern Munich and Marseille advanced to the European Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday; Chelsea will need a two-goal comeback against Napoli today, Wednesday, to keep England from being shut out of the final eight.
