Ladies college and MLS playoffs come to Texas

Last chance to support the home team. Despite a lackluster 11-8-1 record, the UT Lady Longhorns got the nod to host an NCAA subregional this weekend, one of only five unseeded teams in the country to get that honor. The seeded team in the group is the California Golden Bears, No. 9 in the country, who face Rice at 4pm Friday, before the Horns take on 18-3-1 UT-El Paso in the nightcap at 6:30pm. The win-ners face off at 2pm Sunday, Nov. 13, for the right to advance to the Sweet 16 next weekend. Myers Stadium; $7 ($3 youth/student) each day, including the doubleheader. Best bet: Go right after work on Friday, catch the last quarter of the Wolverines' game, and stay for the Horns-Miners. Or, road trip: The 2005 MLS Cup is this Sunday, just up the road in the north Dallas suburb of Frisco. The game features two very attractive attacking squads: the L.A. Galaxy led by Landon Donovan, Herculez Gomez, and Cobi Jones, against the NE Revolution, with Clint Dempsey and Taylor Twellman. Dempsey's goal beat the Chicago Fire last weekend, while a Donovon pair sunk the Colorado Rapids at Mile High Stadium. Tix at Ticketmaster; more info at www.mlsnet.com. And if you can't get off the couch, the game is live on ABC, 2:30pm Sunday.
