Shopping and Fucking
From the first stomach-turning minute, audiences for the Vortex Repertory Company production of Shopping and Fucking are in for a rough ride; they're witness to the horrible depths to which its characters have sunk and the desperation with which they try to claw their way out.
"...whom give it a valiant attempt, but with only Clay Towery and Stephanie Swenson swimming the ocean of dialect..."

Uncaged
Wayne Alan Brenner's friend Sylvia has an opinion about the Vortex Repertory Company's workshop performance Uncaged: The public deserves more for its money than an end-of-the-workshop variety show unless what's onstage is well-performed and original, and except for a handful of pieces by a few participants -- most notably the emcee Ratgirl -- she thinks this isn't.
"...Like that twisted family thing with Elizabeth Doss and Clay Towery, that was pretty clever."..."

The Bridge Burner
Aaron Brown can write, no doubt about that, but in his new play The Bridge Burner the Austin playwright has used his fine ear for dialogue, skills of characterization, and sense of outrage to cover familiar territory in the vein of dysfunctional family drama.
"...the cameo performances of Wendy Goodwin, Stephanie Swenson, and Clay Towery shine like first-water diamonds, and which performances make..."

A Midsummer Night's Dream: Holy conceptual contortions, Batman!
In his Austin Shakespeare Festival staging of A Midsummer Night's Dream, director Robert Tolaro creates a fantasy world of superheroes with a strong hint of modern Chicago 'burb, that pulls up a bit short conceptually, but is still a fun, rambunctious evening.

Cyrano de Bergerac
The Vortex Summer Youth Theatre production of Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac plays up the comic elements of the story, mostly to good effect, without ever losing touch with its romantic theatricality and verve.

Fractured Greeks: Great Deeds, Human Follies Fractured Greeks
If any company in Austin is equipped to handle the mythological heft of the Greek tragedies, it's VORTEX Repertory Company, and under the direction of Bonnie Cullum, Fractured Greeks, a collection of scenes taken from and inspired by the Trojan War plays of Euripides and Sophocles, holds together pretty well.

A Clockwork Orange: Re-Sexing the Orange
It's a pretty cool choice to produce a stage version of such a popular filmed story as A Clockwork Orange, and while there's plenty of enthusiasm in the performance of this Fabulous and Ridiculous Theatre production, director AnnaCatherine Rutledge's transgendered take on the tale doesn't quite pull this raskazz into belief-suspending terrorism.

Evil New Yorkers and Bit-Whoredom
They're horrible! They're evil, mean, and terrible! They're New Yorkers! They're the Fabulous and Ridiculous Theatre, and they're giving laid-back Austin a shot of scrappy, sophisticated, lowbrow, smart-ass theatre.
