SXSW 2010 Alums on the Big Screen and Small
Screening news for Marwencol, Strange Powers, and Lovers of Hate
By Kimberley Jones, Fri., Nov. 5, 2010
On the heels of Monsters' creepy-crawling into multiplexes last week, two more alums of the 2010 South by Southwest Film Festival are touching down in Austin theatres: Jeff Malmberg's terrific (and Jury Award-winning) documentary feature Marwencol (pictured), about a head-trauma survivor who built a World War II-themed miniature city and peopled it with posable dolls, and Kerthy Fix's intimate documentary portrait Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields. And while we're on the subject of standout SXSW films, Bryan Poyser's scabrous comedy Lovers of Hate will premiere on the Sundance Channel on Nov. 9. The Chronicle spoke with all three filmmakers back in March; you can check out the features in our archive at austinchronicle.com/screens. See Film Listings for showtimes.
