'SXSW Presents'

KLRU, Beef & Pie Productions, The Austin Chronicle, and South by Southwest have teamed up for SXSW Presents, an independent film series airing Tuesdays at 9pm on Channel 18 (Time Warner Cable Channel 9). Hosted and co-produced by SXSW Film Producer Matt Dentler, the third season of the series runs through January. This week's installment is Amy Grappell's Light From the East, which, when it screened at the 2005 festival, our Nora Ankrum wrote "When a New York acting troupe went to Kiev in August of 1991, they ... didn't expect to witness a coup. ... The Americans, video cameras in hand, recorded the reactions of their Ukrainian hosts while pressing on with their play, and now filmmaker Amy Grappell has squeezed the 14-year-old footage for all it's worth, managing to turn a string of seeming nonmoments into a meaningful, if understated, story of the chasm between East and West."
