Flicker's Best

By Marc Savlov, February 11, 2005, Screens

It began in 1994 in Athens, Ga., with a dream of microcinema bliss and spread, virally, all around the world – New York, California, Louisiana, France, Germany, Austin, and elsewhere. And now Flicker Austin, the little bimonthly film festival that Chapel Hill, N.C., transplant Cory Ryan founded in 2001, is turning four, which means it's officially old enough to know better but too young to care. To celebrate, they're holding a Best Of screening at permanent home the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown (409 Colorado, 476-1320, www.drafthouse.com), featuring the best films and filmmakers from the previous four years, a raffle, live performances by the Handsome Charlies, and "amazing" prizes courtesy of the Austin Craft Mafia. Most of all, though, it's a chance for the uninitiated to catch what they've missed while basking in the reflected glow of Austin's film underground, where a $20 buck reel of Kodak Super-8 still comes with cool inherent, and Fisher Price's Pixelvision camera never went out of style. Thursday, Feb. 17, 9:45pm, $5. For more information go to www.flickeraustin.com.
