Outdoor Shorts: Our town's premiere support system for the art and practice of Super-8 filmmaking, the Austin Cinemaker Coop, is hosting an outdoor screening of films and videos shot recently in Austin. The summer screening is scheduled for Saturday, July 26, 9pm, in the garden of Sugar 'N Spice (2529 S. Lamar). Admission is $2 for non-members; tacos and beer will be available for purchase although it would be a good idea to bring a blanket or something to sit on. For more info call 469-0114... Indoor Shorts: Independent short works by local and national filmmakers and new media artists will be showcased at the monthly salon of the Association of Independent Video and Film Artists (AIVF). The gathering and screening takes place on Monday, July 28, 8pm, at the Electric Lounge (302 Bowie); admission is free and open to the public. For more info call 719-7922... Natural Selection is the title of the screenplay in the spotlight during this week's live script reading hosted by the Austin Heart of Film Screenwriters Conference. Natural Selection is written by Brian Burrow and Allen Odom, two semi-finalists in last year's screenplay competition; Shannon L. Owens is producing the low-budget film. The reading is scheduled for Wednesday, July 30, 7pm at Bertram's (1601 Guadalupe)... The deadline is also fast approaching for the submission of films for competition in the Austin Film Festival held concurrently with Heart of Film Conference. Films can be submitted in three categories: Feature length (75 minutes or longer, no documentaries); short film; and student short film (narratives 30 minutes maximum). In the feature-length and the student categories, the applicant must be one of the credited writers; the short film division is open to anyone who wishes to enter. Entries must be postmarked by August 12. For applications and more info call 800/310-FEST or write 1600 Nueces, Austin, TX, 78701... Austin is the name of a new video-based soap opera produced exclusively for the Internet. The 16-episode series debuted July 21 on InterneTV (http://www.internetv.com), with new episodes scheduled to appear weekly. Tara Veneruso directs and stars in the first episode, which revolves around a struggling video artist who moves to the Big Apple and leaves her boyfriend behind. The press release describes Austin as being about "love, lust, and slack." Cast members include Adam Patterson, Abe Brown, Kerri Lause, Marie Newmeyer, Lori Hartman, and Courtney Hopkin. In order to view Austin (and most of the other videos and shorts on the InterneTV site), you need to use VDOLive or Vivo video streaming plug-ins, which can be downloaded from the locally produced site. (You also need a Power Mac or equivalent hardware, which, I'd like to remind the computer fairies, cannot be downloaded; such things must be bestowed.)... The Austin Film Society's Summer Free-for-All series this week presents Chantal Akerman's 1993 film From the East. An uncompromising storyteller, Akerman is well known for her minimalist narrative and visual styles. This free screening will mark the Austin premiere of her unconventional "travelogue." Showtime is Tuesday, July 29, 7pm, at the Texas Union Theatre.
