Welcome to the Ride for the Roses

By Rita Radostitz, October 15, 2004, News

Unlike the first Ride for the Roses, when a couple thousand cyclists struggled over the hills west of Austin with insufficient water and nearly empty rest stops, some 6,500 cyclists are expected to ride the roads east of Austin on Sunday. There will be plenty of food and water – six rest stops dot the four different courses (routes of 25, 40, 70 and 100 miles). Each rest stop will be stocked with plenty of water, Powerade, fruit, granola bars, and gooey peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. One rest stop – in downtown Elgin – will be staffed by cancer survivor volunteers. Here's the weekend schedule:

Powerbar Health and Sports Expo

Friday, 5-8pm; Saturday 10am-8pm; Palmer Events Center (Barton Springs Road between Lamar and South First) Riders can pick up their registration packets. There will also be cancer screening and information about cancer awareness and prevention, as well as everything you can think of related to cycling – equipment, clothes, and LAF gear.

Saturday, 8-11am; Auditorium Shores Come enjoy a one-mile walk, followed by all kinds of cancer education and family-related fun, such as a hockey goal challenge with Fang and the Austin Ice Bats, the Bike Safety Rodeo, and a scavenger hunt followed by a yellow Jell-O food fight. www.laf.org
