If you've got a healthy curiosity about Austin's energy investments -- even those we can't unload because there are no takers -- and a day trip to spare, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is holding a public hearing Tuesday, July 28, 5-7pm, in the Bay City Civic Center, 201 Seventh St., Bay City. The subject: the results of the NRC's Special Investigation Team review of the reactor vessel of the South Texas (Nuclear) Project, Unit 1 (about 12 miles from Bay City) which was, um, leaking when it had to be shut down. The meeting will address potential fixes and the possibility of a restart. The public can observe and ask questions following the meeting. For more info: NRC at 817/860-8128.

Last week, local environmentalists, joined by leaders from Global Exchange, Co-op America, and other national eco-groups, held a planning meeting for the upcoming Austin Green Festival, a two-day conference promoting sustainability and social justice. Scheduled for Oct. 11-12 at the Austin Convention Center, the festival will feature speakers; exhibits on green technology, food, and businesses; workshops; and networking opportunities. A second Green Festival will take place in San Francisco, Nov. 8-9. For more info, visit www.greenfestivals.com.
