Luísa Maita
Fio da Memória (Cumbancha)
Reviewed by Alejandra Ramirez, Fri., Sept. 30, 2016
Luísa Maita's 2010 debut Lero-Lero referenced the sounds of her native Brazil with João Gilberto's subtle acoustics and Antonio Carlos Jobim's bossa nova. Follow-up Fio da Memória finds the São Paulo native lacing her vintage roots with low-end bass electronics to create an amalgam of sensual jazz tempos ("Ela"), earnest jungle synths ("Around You"), slinky dubstep shimmies ("Na Asa"), and Afrobeat rumbles ("Folia"). Colorful and sensual, her culture reigns paramount: images of urban ghetto life with baile funk in the Rio de Janeiro favelas, crowds swaying their bodies in carnal and Carnival pleasures.
