Murry Hammond
I Don't Know Where I'm Going but I'm on My Way (Humminbird)The solo debut from Old 97's bassist Hammond delves deep into the roots of Americana, spiritually searching and starkly nostalgic in railroad rambling. Opening hymn "What Are They Doing in Heaven Today?" darkly mines the Handsome Family, and the Carter Family receives two haunting tributes. Hammond's originals strike equally powerful, from the gentle Simon & Garfunkel folk of "Lost at Sea" to the bruising "Wreck of the 97" and yodeling prayer "I Believe, I Believe."
