The Replacements
Don't You Know Who I Think I Was? The Best of the Replacements (Sire)
Simply brilliant distillation of the Replacements, Minneapolis' Eighties bar band who made alienation and boredom sound inviting. It's their first compilation to include songs from the early Twin/Tone days and, as a bonus for the hardcore, two new ones. "Message to the Boys" and "Pool & Dive" are two of Paul Westerberg's better latter-day efforts, niching nicely into the drunken clutter surrounding them. Fans will quibble with song selection, as always, but the 'Mats mattered, and this one disc is one reason why.
