KVRX Local Live, Vol. 4
Refurbished Robots
With all the ugly infighting going on recently at KOOP, the station with which it shares the 91.7FM frequency, student-run KVRX does one hell of a job in keeping well above the fray every night on the air. With Refurbished Robots they further their noble cause of live, free-willed human radio programming with a collection of the best music from largely local acts that have appeared on their Sunday night Local Live show. Highlights include gorgeous instrumental music from Athens, Ga.'s Macha, moody pop from Austin's Sounds of Soviet Lightning (aka Knife in the Water), Palaxy Tracks, and the Swells, and the way out jazz formulations of Spaceheads and Blue Noise Band. "Cultural whiplash" is what they call this down at the station, and when you're mixing up the likes of traditionalists Mariachi Estrella, irreverent ska-punkers Middle Finger, the totally silly Dooms UK, and the sad and beautiful chamber orchestrations of Cinders, you're liable to end up in a neck brace. That, of course, and one of the best $5 CDs you can find.
