Wine of the Week

Wines for lovers

By Wes Marshall, February 10, 2012, Food

Love is expressed in so many ways. There's the starry-eyed romantic and the lusty Lothario and everything in between, and all of them have their own perfect wine. But this year, I have a novel idea. Love involves commitment, promises kept, and generosity of spirit. Let's show some of that munificence to our loved ones. I'm proposing you take roughly two hours of your wages, figure out how much that would be, and splurge on a really nice bottle of Champagne or sparkling wine. And just think of the love it will spread around. You'll help all those nice people involved in the wine business, from the farmers to the winemakers to the folks here in town who stock it on the shelves. So:

If you make $20,000 a year, put $17 into a Simonnet-Febvre Crémant de Bourgogne Brut Rosé.

Folks who make $40,000 might buy a $36 bottle of Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Champagne.

Software engineers making $70,000 should look for the scrumptious $55 Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs.

You lawyers and doctors out there making $300,000 or more: Consider a bottle of Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Rosé ($250).

Finally, you industrial titans should order a bottle of the unforgettable Salon Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs ($475).

Remember, your lover is worth it! And if you're looking for the ideal accompaniment, Delysia Chocolatier's Valentine's Day package includes three Champagne truffles made with 75% cocoa, a perfect match for Brut Champagne.
