• If watching The Red Shoes as a child inspired you to study dance, the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar has the perfect event for you. Enjoy a four-course feast and screening of the classic film, to benefit Ballet Austin. $75 per person; necessary reservations can be made at www.originalalamo.com. Thursday, Aug. 5, 7pm.

• Local real estate agent Stacey Rider (www.fourpointsfoodie.com) is one of five finalists in a competition to develop a new flavor for Ghirardelli Chocolate. Rider will present a recipe demonstration and tasting at Faraday's Kitchen Store (1501-A RR 620 N., 266-5666, www.faradayskitchenstore.com). Saturday, Aug. 7, 10am-2pm.

• The gardening tots at Ronda's Montessori Garden (4300 Mt. Vernon, 707-8635, www.rondasgarden.net) invite Austin parents and kids to their annual Basilfest. Festivities will include garden tours, basil plants for sale, samples of basil tea, and foods made with basil. Sunday-Friday, Aug. 8-13, 9am-noon.

• Author and Asian medicine expert Pam Ferguson will be the featured speaker at the monthly Wisdom Wednesday series at Satay (3202 W. Anderson #205, 467-6731, www.satayusa.com). $30 covers the program and dinner prepared by chef/owner Dr. Foo Swasdee. Cash bar. Reservations required. Wednesday, Aug. 11, 6:30-8:30pm.

• Award-winning bartender Bill Norris will pass the torch to wine director and new bar manager Josh Loving before leaving Fino (2905 San Gabriel, 474-2905, www.finoaustin.com) to pursue his own project. The evening will include a five-course Chef's Table dinner paired with specialty cocktails. $75 per person; reservations required, and seating is limited. Wednesday, Aug. 11, 6:30pm.
