LuLu B's Vietnamese Sandwiches
2113 S. Lamar, 921-4828Tuesday-Saturday, noon-6pm
lulu b's, operating out of a trailer on South Lamar, may have the nicest atmosphere of all the bánh mì joints, due to the fresh air and huge, shady pecan trees. The sandwiches of either chicken or pork are prepared one of three ways: plainly grilled, with a lemongrass marinade, or barbecue style. There are two vegetarian options as well: lemongrass tofu and avocado. The lemongrass tofu is my personal favorite, followed closely by the barbecue pork; you really can't go wrong, though, as all of the fillings are excellent. The marinated cucumber, radish, and carrots are joined by chile and fresh cilantro, and the toasted baguette is spread with Japanese mayonnaise. lulu b's recently changed bread bakers, and now the sandwiches are larger for the same price ($4.50). Although the sandwiches are more expensive here, the reassuring and visible cleanliness of the kitchen and the obvious quality of the meats and other ingredients more than make up for it.
