Be Nice to the Bikes

RECEIVED Thu., Oct. 12, 2023

Dear Manic Motorists
I know that it is hard to sit, entrapped in our motorized wheel chairs, especially here in Austin where the infrastructure of roads is horrible and the worsening traffic continues, but as a bicyclist, I am begging you to please leave me alone. I believe that I ask of this favor on behalf of all Austin cyclist as well.
Know that honking and yelling do nothing to deter us from riding our bikes and actually it is quite dangerous. Imagine being honked at time and time again while doing absolutely nothing wrong, following the rules of the road if you will. This is startling and annoying! I can’t tell you how many times I have been honked at by you, motorist, driving down the opposite side of the road even. Why?
I understand, I promise, because I too need to drive around Austin in my own metal beast, but I understand more so the need not to scare or curse at a cyclist but instead give ample space and consideration. After all, we are simply trying to live healthy lives, reduce our carbon footprint and trying to enjoy the beauty of our great city from a different perspective. Please do honk, of course, if there is an imminent danger or a true concern that you have. If you don’t ride a bicycle or haven’t, I would suggest that you do. Perhaps it will help reduce the mania.
Sincerely a concerned bicycle enthusiast,
Martin Lewis
