Dear Julian.
My name is Javier Martinez and every time I pass through Austin, I try to pick up a
Chronicle. On my last pass through, I read your article on And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead. [“
Days of Being Wild,” Music, March 4]
Wow, what a great read. I thought it was a great history of a great record. More specifically, the last two paragraphs of section "I" stand out.
I've been a high school English teacher for 20+ years and students always struggle with writing about music (Sometimes I give album reviews as an optional assignment) or any art for that matter. Trying to get the abstract into language is no easy feat. You crushed it at the end of "I".
Those two paragraphs were so fun to read. "Omen unheeded," "dropped the bottle..." So good. As I read it siting in A Million to Juan on the East side, I giggled a little bit, looked up from the paper and said, "Wow." Great stuff.
This letter is just to say thanks for writing and that I look forward to reading more of your stuff in the future.
