Dear Editor,
I want to commend Brant Bingamon RE: "
Why Did Adil Die?" [News, Dec. 10] It was a thoughtful and thorough report on the death of Adil Dghoughi, an immigrant from Morocco. I appreciate the effort in the pronunciation of his name, which is an act of respect not typically seen in most media coverage of crimes against immigrants. It's important to humanize the victims of this kind of violence to elevate how devastating bigotry is to a community. This story is especially evocative of the dangerous power of bigoted speech, especially when it comes from people in power like Rep. Boebert (R-Colorado) and her xenophobic and anti-Muslim rhetoric directed at her colleague, Ilhan Omar (D-Mn). This in combination with Boebert's obsession with assault weapons can and will further enable hate crimes to our neighbors. I appreciate all who are fighting for justice for Adil. I never heard of Mano Amiga before, but I am a huge fan now. We need more citizen involvement [and] diligence in protecting our communities from violence. Finally, I appreciate Sarah Todd's perceptive sentiments. This was a hate crime.
