Mask Misstep

Dear Editor,
Governor Abbott’s decision to rescind the statewide mask mandate and allow all businesses to reopen at 100% capacity is an outrage. Not only is the governor guilty of ignoring indisputable scientific evidence, but he is also now responsible for the thousands of preventable Texas deaths yet to come. His cowardly directive is a slap in the face to health care workers, front-line responders, and essential employees who are continuously put in harm’s way, to keep Texans safe, protected, and well-served.
While more and more Texans are getting vaccinated every day, our state’s immunization numbers are nowhere near acceptable levels of widespread coverage. Instead of playing politics with the lives of hardworking Texans, Governor Abbott must continue to abide by the CDC’s COVID-19 regulations set forth nearly a year ago. His failure to do so will cost our state even more than it has already lost recently. We cannot afford such a cruel and inhumane misstep on our road to recovery.
