Examine Your Conscience

RECEIVED Tue., Sept. 22, 2020

Senator Cornyn,
I am writing, as one of your constituents, to urge you to reject the very idea of seating a Supreme Court Justice during an election year. I recall four years ago that you insisted that the decision as to who should select the next Supreme Court Justice should be left up to the people, at the ballot box. That was in February 2016, after the death of Justice Scalia and a full nine months before the presidential election, as primaries were just beginning. Now, apparently, you have changed your mind, and with voting already begun in several states, and 42 days before election day, you're all about the Senate taking care of this business without delay.
I know you are an intelligent individual, and you know what the word "hypocrite" means. Being a hypocrite doesn't seem to faze you at all, so let's move on. Recent polls indicate that a majority of Americans do not want this seat filled until at the very least after the election. Polls in swing states indicate that majorities of voters want the winner of the election to select the next Justice. Your own Senate race, with almost 30% of Texans undecided, may be just a bit too close for comfort, which is probably why you are campaigning so much this time around. Your actions concerning the Supreme Court could very well sway that vote.
I have watched as you ignored every despicable act of our current president, remaining silent in the face of his lies and reckless behaviors and pronouncements. We now know he understood the dangers and possible devastation of the coronavirus, and yet he lied about it, telling people it was no worse than the flu. Now 200,000 + Americans are dead, and many many more saddled with a pre-existing condition. And yet you want to seat a Justice as soon as possible so that the only protection tens of millions of Americans have against catastrophic medical debt can be dismantled?
Senator, I ask you to examine your conscience, and vote against seating a Supreme Court Justice in the midst of an extremely consequential election.
