Haute News

RECEIVED Mon., Aug. 24, 2020

Dear Editor,
I couldn't believe my eyes when I opened the latest issue and saw a photograph of Terre Haute's own Fowler Park! I'm an Austin transplant who grew up in Terre Haute, Ind. The author, Kevin Curtin, wrote that his "quarantine trip was nearly nullified by an indignant anti-masker who tried to walk up to us and tell us about how he doesn't need to wear a face covering. We barely escaped."
Which … yeah, I don't doubt there's an anti-mask crowd there. However, Vigo County (where Terre Haute is located) went for Obama in both 2008 and 2012, and has the distinction of being the most accurate bellwether county in America. They've picked the presidential winner in all but 2 elections since 1888.
Terre Haute also has a plethora of parks for a city its size, one of the things I miss about it. I wonder sometimes if the town in Parks and Rec was modeled off of Terre Haute. As in the show, you can also afford a sizable house on a municipal employee's salary! A wild daydream in booming Austin.
Anyway, hope you enjoyed some Terre Haute facts!
