Dear Editor, What’s fuzzy, yellow and black, and responsible for nearly all of the food we eat? Bees, of course! Keeping bees buzzing is a cause that affects not only humans, but all life on Earth. That’s why hearing that Travis County passed a ban on neonicotinoids put a spring in my step this past Tuesday, August 20. Neonicotinoid pesticides are a huge threat to bees, as they behave as a neurotoxin to their little bodies. They affect their ability to navigate, forage for food, and fly, as well as suppressing their immune system and shortening their life span, a fate undeserving of our pollinators. The work Environment Texas did to bring us here is impressive, but not finished. Hopefully, Travis County’s actions last Tuesday will inspire other Texas counties to follow suit and make this world a better place for our fuzzy yellow friends.
