CD 10 Contest Context

RECEIVED Tue., July 30, 2019

Dear Editor,
Two issues I wish Mr. King had added to his article to add context [“Ms. Davis Goes To …,” News, July 26]. First, raising money is not the most useful metric to measure the Democratic primary. Democrats will always be outraised by Republicans in TX-10 because the incumbent is personally wealthy and out-of-state PACs continue to shovel buckets of money to the incumbent. Democrats need money to run, but they also need organization and ideas. Second, past activities are often the best predictor of future activities. Only one candidate, Siegel, has spent his working life in a variety of activities that benefit ordinary people. He has been a public school teacher, a labor organizer, a civil rights attorney, and an assistant city attorney defending Austin’s right to be a sanctuary city. Dr. Gandhi is an excellent physician and he does tremendous work at the People’s Community Clinic, but his political experience is limited. Hutcheson has chosen to spend her entire career representing businesses against ordinary people. I understand she is pro-choice, but so are Siegel and Gandhi. Being pro-choice, by itself, does not make a person a progressive.
