Williams in the Wild

RECEIVED Sun., Aug. 26, 2018

Dear Editor,
Diners at Terry Black’s BBQ may have been surprised last Friday to see Congressman Roger Williams campaigning there. For starters, it’s unusual to see Williams in the wild: the congressman, who represents the 25th district, is notorious for trying to evade constituents who don’t already agree with his policy positions. Even odder: Terry Black’s isn’t in the 25th, it’s in the 21st, as keen-eyed observers were quick to point out on social media. Indeed, it seems Texas Republicans have so thoroughly gerrymandered Austin that they don’t even know the borders of their own districts.
Were the GOP offering policy proposals popular with a majority of voters, they wouldn’t have to slice up the map to win. Still, as a resident of the 21st who would love to see more honest representation for our neighbors in the 25th, I’d be happy to see Congressman Williams continue campaigning here in the 21st anytime he wishes.
