An Insane Idea

RECEIVED Fri., Dec. 1, 2017

Dear Editor,
Has Austin really sunk this low? A private sports venture proposes a giant, professional soccer stadium on public parkland at the confluence of Lady Bird Lake and Barton Creek, and the proposal is not immediately canned as out-of-hand by our mayor, our council members, or our best and much-loved City Hall watchdog and Numero Uno soccer fan/reporter?? [See "Soccer Watch," Nov. 10.]
It’s an insane idea, whether on the Zilker waterfront or any other waterfront parkland. We need more parkland, not less, and we especially need to protect every bit of the waterfront parkland we have throughout all of Austin.
Last time I checked, soccer does not need, nor does it benefit from, a beautiful lake, a crystal clear spring-fed creek, ancient trees, or a hike and bike trail. I don't want to vote on it; I want some leadership from elected officials to kill it dead already. And Nick Barbaro should be demanding nothing less. Please.
Go ahead. Welcome professional soccer to Austin. But hands off our public parkland.
