Sinking Fast

Dear Editor,
S.O.S. – Help, we're sinking! I've lived in this city a very long time, and each year the situation has become worse. In my residential neighborhood, a structure with 10 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms has been erected. Most would call it a hotel, but the city of Austin calls it a duplex, and it's a practice destroying our neighborhoods. Council does nothing. On my way about, the barricades come down for MetroRail, traffic backs up, we wait and we wait, the trolley passes, and I see no one on board. These people still haven't timed the traffic lights. Everything they do has made this city a more unaffordable place to live, especially for our citizens of modest means, many of whom have had to move out of homes that have been in their families for generations. Past and present, Council has engaged in legislative and intellectual frippery, ignoring the core issues of our community. It's a Roman farce. There are endless festivals, races, games, entertainment of every sort, and we can't get enough of it. It's all great fun.
