Political Football

RECEIVED Tue., Dec. 16, 2014

Dear Editor,
Attorney General Greg Abbott can't have it both ways. Every year, the Texas Commission on Jail Standards releases a report detailing the money Texas jails spend on housing immigrants for the federal government. And every year, Abbott complains that the federal government does not fully reimburse Texas for the massive costs. Abbott's recent legal actions, however, contradict his annual protests. He is leading a lawsuit challenging President Obama's action on immigration, declaring Obama has overstepped his authority. Not only does this lawsuit have zero legal footing, but, if successful, it would have the effect of continuing to fill Texas jails with undocumented people on hold for Immigration, most of whom pose absolutely no threat to public safety. Abbott is again using immigrants – human lives – as a political football, and that is shameful.
