Ain't Nothin' But a Sandwich

RECEIVED Sat., Dec. 13, 2014

Dear Editor,
The December 5th issue featured two stories that caught my eye: one on the McQuilliams shooting incident Downtown [“Shooter Had 'Hate in His Heart,'” News], and one on the public intoxication arrest of retired Lt. Col. Don Timmerman [“Public Intoxication?” News]. After a beer-soaked night out on November 7, Timmerman and his wife were both arrested for P.I., and by the looks of it, rightfully so, although Timmerman denies it. The next day he was feted at the Longhorns game with a fly-over, and he thought it was ironic. What's ironic is that Sergeant Adam Johnson, who ended the McQuilliams rampage with a precise shot from 100 yards away while holding the reins of two horses, has not been celebrated as Timmerman was, just for being in the military. It shows how the relentless, pervasive public relations scam in support of the Long War (our unending “war against terror”) needs a reality check, even in a weird place like Austin. Sgt. Johnson is the real hero.
