Progress Overlooked

RECEIVED Thu., Oct. 16, 2014

Dear Editor,
Regarding “APD Cracks Down on dBs,” [Playback, Oct. 17]: First and foremost, I want to thank Kevin Curtin for covering this topic. The last sentence of the piece were not words spoken from our lips, so I credit Kevin for a dramatic close. I believe in our lengthy interview he did overlook the progress that is being made.
One thing we recognize is that music, and specifically live music, is a valuable and cherished thread in the Downtown area. But we should also remember that within the ever-changing landscape, there are many stakeholders. The rules that are in place were here before many of the condos and clubs. In part because of this, Downtown is just about the most dynamic community in Austin.
It is greatly appreciated when club managers and owners self-monitor their venues and demonstrate they really care about the people who live, work, and visit Downtown. I know that the media often focuses on the negative to incite the mind and foster patronage. I hope to fill a gap that is often missed, that is the much deserved shout-out to the establishments that are going the extra mile to provide quality entertainment at a palatable volume.
