Sidewalk Success

RECEIVED Tue., Sept. 23, 2014

Dear Editor,
I stopped months ago hoping for Capital Metro to care about feedback from the unwashed masses. However, your series "Where the Sidewalks End," [News, July 11] gave me hope to contact Cap Metro about a bus stop that was not wheelchair accessible.
My wheelchair companion and I stopped there two times in three days on the way to medical appointments. It was an island without an exit. If you were catching another bus, you must unload on the island. If going somewhere else, you needed to unload in an adjoining driveway. Well, one driver let my companion off in the driveway when we were transferring to another bus. When our next bus came, the driver refused to pick him up from the driveway. It took me a while to push the power wheelchair over the 4-inch lip to the bus stop.
I sent pictures of this stop (Cap Metro stop No. 2077, Red River and Dean Keeton) to Cap Metro and the Chronicle. Cap Metro contacted me, and now the stop has been fixed. Accessible ramps were added on both sides of the island, and the main stop was moved to the other side of the driveway. Thanks to both the Chronicle and Cap Metro.
