'A Pyrrhic Victory'

RECEIVED Tue., Oct. 30, 2012

Dear Editor,
The possible election of Mitt Romney, while spelling utter catastrophe for the vast majority of Americans economically, would prove an even greater moral defeat to the forces that worked so hard to get him elected. Of course I do not refer to billionaires and corporations which put the full weight of their power behind a shill who will serve their interests. After all, the rich will always be with us. No, I am talking about something with far-reaching consequences. If Romney is elected, no social conservative will ever again be able to prosecute an agenda based on what they claim to be the "moral absolute." In one fell swoop, they will have destroyed what little credibility might remain in their fight against gay rights, reproductive rights, even what they call "big government." Every cause espoused by conservative Evangelical Christians and conservative Catholic Christians would be lost. My argument will not appeal to secular readers or unbelievers. However, anyone can see that with the Billy Graham family's removal of all references to "cults" from their website in order that the formerly most respected and revered Christian Evangelist of our time could give the stamp of his approval to a man who just the day before, would have been viewed as a cultist who did not even worship the same God …. This is truly the end. Who could have predicted that it would not be secularism, rational thought (!), or moral relativism which would ultimately defeat social conservatism in our day, but those same conservatives, themselves? That is what you call a Pyrrhic victory.
