'Bravo, Obama, Bravo'

RECEIVED Mon., May 14, 2012

Dear Chronicle,
I just want to give props to Obama for coming out and supporting gay marriage. I’m not gay. I’m heterosexual and married, but as my husband would describe me, I am part of the gay community. It’s been a long time coming, and I’m glad the president is supporting gay marriage as well as abolishing “don’t ask, don’t tell.” This is huge! And yet, some are quick to criticize that it’s “too late” and “politically motivated.” The same could be said for the Civil Rights Act or the Clean Water Act. As a conscientious citizen, over the years I’ve learned to be patient with social change. Often times, a change such as this requires a paradigm shift for society at large, and evolution takes time. Frankly, I’m pleasantly surprised by Obama’s declaration being that the mood of the primary season has been desperately setting the time machine to B.C. Let’s appreciate and savor the fact the president of the U.S. has taken the first step in this much-awaited social change to treat everyone equal under the eyes of the law. Bravo, Obama, bravo!
