Dear Editor,
Robert Faires' piece on the Austin Lyric Opera finally shed some light on another great Austin institution about to fall by the wayside [“
Austin Lyric Opera,” the Arts, Aug. 19]. The Armstrong Community Music School is a wonderful place. Its impending demise, the result of ALO's executive oversight and petty board politics, is truly sad. My son has attended music school at Armstrong Community Music School since he was 6 months old. He's now 9, and he plays a mean boogie-woogie. The gift that Armstrong has given him is the gift of music, one that he turns to daily as he sits down at the piano and escapes to a world of creativity, amusement, and pure delight. Thanks to teachers like Rob Greenfield, he sees himself as an artist. The school's director, Margaret Perry, has created an amazing program, supported by a dedicated staff, where kids learn to make music for the sake of fun. Margaret and the staff at the Armstrong Community Music School haven't forgotten what is important about music. It's too bad that Austin Lyric Opera's board of directors have.
