Dear Editor,
Re: Keith Batcher's "On Guns and Bikes" [“
Postmarks,” July 30]: I stand by what I said, that the only purpose of a handgun is to kill. That doesn't mean that every time a handgun is used a death results, only that the purpose is to kill. If Batcher has fired 200,000 rounds over 50 years without hurting/killing anything, it could mean that he's a terrible shot and should have his guns taken away. More likely, it means that he target-shoots, which hopefully means with all that practice he hits what he's aiming at. This should bode well for innocent bystanders. Who have you shot at anyway, Batcher? Are you saying that mere brandishment is effective use of a handgun? If so, why load it? If someone didn't believe a handgun would kill them, would merely brandishing it be effective? Or would you actually have to shoot someone? Can you guarantee that you won't kill someone you shoot at and hit?
