KOOP 91.7FM Plays Local Music All the Time

RECEIVED Fri., April 16, 2010

Dear Editor,
Regarding Billy Burns' letter to the editor "What Has Happened to KGSR?" [“Postmarks,” April 16], he writes, "we don't have a radio station that will play local artists except for KVET after 7pm." I have great news for Billy. There is a station in Austin playing lots of local music during the day: KOOP 91.7FM! KOOP is a community station run primarily by volunteers – it does not cater to the needs of any corporate bottom line, and it does not play the mainstream hits. You want local music? Just this week alone on KOOP, Sara Hickman, Elizabeth Wills, and the Jitterbug Vipers were live in the studio. Live in the studio! If you're not familiar with KOOP – and it sounds like Billy is not – I highly recommend you tune in. You'll be surprised and pleased at the amount of local music, not to mention the diversity of subject matter, passion, and depth of knowledge. As the host of Inner Views on KOOP, I feel privileged to be part of one of Austin's true gems.
