'Chronicle' Biased Against 'Pro-Lifers'

RECEIVED Thu., Dec. 17, 2009

Dear Editor,
Re: "Family Planning Contracts Approved" [News, Dec. 18]: I was quite astonished to read so much bias in a noneditorial news article. I know that The Austin Chronicle leans way to the left, so much so that it is practically parallel to the ground, which is where I wanted to leave this edition after reading your news story.
But joking aside, you would have more credence as a journalist if you pretended to be even-handed with those with whom you do not agree. "Spelman's remarks elicited a predictable chorus of boos from the dozens of anti-choice protesters."
Although you might think I am some crackpot überconservative, please note that I am a recent graduate of the LBJ School of Public Affairs (where Spelman is a lecturer) and like to think I know a thing or two about the development of public policy, which is the arena in which this debate resides.
If you wanted to get in your shots at those "anti-choice" folks (we prefer the term "pro-life"), you could at least point out that we find abortion to be more than just "morally objectionable" – we are being forced to pay for the murder of children. (And many of us do not support the death penalty, in case you were wondering.)
Additionally and finally, Travis County is continuing a policy of making it "easier" for low-income, usually uneducated, and usually minority women to kill their own children, furthering Margaret Sanger's despicable agenda to prevent these groups from producing children in order to "better society."
"It is a vicious cycle; ignorance breeds poverty and poverty breeds ignorance. There is only one cure for both, and that is to stop breeding these things. Stop bringing to birth children whose inheritance cannot be one of health or intelligence. Stop bringing into the world children whose parents cannot provide for them. Herein lies the key of civilization." (Sanger, 1915)
In my view, the "better society" is the one in which people are welcomed and valued whatever their circumstances.
