Share the Wealth

RECEIVED Tue., Dec. 15, 2009

Dear Editor,
It’s reported that the U of T Austin’s football program earned close to $90 million this year, and the coach got a $2 million raise. They’ve got an excellent athletic department, but why not share the wealth? Poor neglected and underfunded KUT, the university’s flagship radio station, is reduced to running commercials, a violation of Federal Communications Commission rules, just to keep operating. The university’s royal Regents, appointed by the Gov. Perry brain trust, actually hold the nonprofit license, granted by the FCC for educational, noncommercial stations, a license which prohibits commercials. What if a small portion of the UT sports budget, equivalent to the approximately $5 million the coach gets, were allocated for KUT? Then the station wouldn’t have to run those annoying, repetitive commercials and maybe even not have to have begging-bowl fund drives.
