UT Holds KUT License

RECEIVED Mon., Nov. 2, 2009

Dear Editor,
Re: “Doesn't Support KUT's Management” [“Postmarks,” Oct. 30]: What the latest of the many recent critics of KUT’s management might be interested in is that it’s the University of Texas that holds the station’s FCC nonprofit, public broadcasting license, not the station. Specifically, the board of regents (aka “Kings”), holders of the license, oversees KUT and the station’s compliance with FCC rules, which prohibit commercials, something listeners hear regularly and maddeningly on KUT broadcasts. Also, according to the budget office, UT provides less than 5% of the station’s operating expenses, necessitating fund drives and the endless commercial announcements we so enjoy. How much does our public, taxpayer-funded university spend on football each year or on the immaculate country-club-like grounds of UT? Maybe the regents could support KUT financially out of the massive UT budget, then the station’s management wouldn’t need commercials or, perhaps, fundraisers.
