Offensive Display of Age Discrimination

RECEIVED Wed., Aug. 19, 2009

Dear Editor,
I appreciate that the Chronicle will publish letters from different viewpoints like "Station Coverage Slanted" ["Postmarks," Aug. 14]. However, that letter is an offensive display of age discrimination. The only case the writer made for changing deejays at KUT was age, as in, "It's time for the old deejays to move on and make room for younger voices.” The letter does not give reasonable examples such as changing jazz deejays for rock deejays or bad deejays for good deejays. It only mentions age and our "town with a huge population of young people.” It also takes a swipe at people who have listened to music for "the past three decades.” This is all discriminatory and illegal in any workplace. But don't take my word for it. The letter writer should get a second opinion by asking her human resources department at work. Ask them if it's OK to tell people at work they are old and need to move on, allowing younger employees to take their spots. Ask if it's OK to use the term "ol' timers" from her letter when describing co-workers. If she still has a job after asking this, realize that any employer would be sued if it made employee changes based on age.
Respectfully,
Carter Stubbs
