Diamond and Busts

RECEIVED Mon., Aug. 10, 2009

Dear Editor,
The Bob Dylan, John Mellencamp, and Willie Nelson concert at Dell Diamond last week was great, but what is up with the police action? There was an inordinate number of police at the concert, and they were periodically pulling people out of the stage-front crowd. For no apparent reason, teams of police officers would wade through the crowd and remove slightly sedated-looking concertgoers. These officers were directed through the crowd by radio. Temporarily installed surveillance cameras on the roofs and at least one plainclothes informant surfing the crowd identified the targets. Since when does a concert become a sting operation? I don’t know why these patrons were being removed, but whatever it was, it should not be illegal. It was apparent that many people agreed with this position by the booing that broke out when a peaceful-enough looking group was handcuffed in the open and removed. Future detainees were moved out of sight of the crowd before any action was taken. In a civil society, laws must be obeyed and unreasonable laws must not be tolerated. I hope the people that were booing will think about that.
