Mental Jujitsu

RECEIVED Wed., June 24, 2009

Dear Michael Ventura,
Re: “Letters at 3AM: From Window Rock to Albuquerque” [June 19]: From Coke cans to unevolving rocks, the mind is in a real toy store. Who is to say that a rock or a Coke can that changes form is not evolving even if evolution is arbitrarily defined as moving up the scale of consciousness? What is the essence of rockness or Coke-canness, and what did they become next?
Nature with a capital “N,” which is beyond Ananda and beyond comprehension by the intellect, stirred into a cocktail of relative morality and mixed with a tip of the hat to scientific reasoning, has the potential to perform mental jujitsu on the mind. Which may ironically be the only thing beyond entertainment value in the whole road-trip scenario, because if the mind can be blindsided and utterly confused enough to stop dead still, even for an instant, truth floods in.
