Too Many Police in South Austin

RECEIVED Wed., May 6, 2009

Dear Editor,
To anyone living in or traveling in South Austin, something strange has happened: The police are everywhere. I appreciate certain things about having the police around, but this has become ridiculous. I can’t drive down South Manchaca at night (south of William Cannon) without seeing two or three people pulled over (most being arrested or at least handcuffed) by three squad cars each. I get it! Where we live, there are a lot of poorer people who may be easy targets because they can’t afford to get their auto tags or their inspection stickers and are less likely to have insurance. This leads to bigger (and better, I suppose for them) arrests after dispatch relays the warrant that is out or a search reveals pot in the glove compartment. I mean, seriously, I get it. So rather than gripe against it, I wanted to warn everyone coming this way to watch out. That’s all.
