Art Education and Phys Ed Are Both Useless

RECEIVED Tue., March 10, 2009

Dear Editor,
I heard on the morning news that we have people arguing over weather fine-arts education or physical-fitness education is more beneficial to middle school students. How about a third option? They are equally useless! Clearly, we are falling behind other countries in education. I read the other day that 99% of French students start preschool by age 3. By kindergarten they are able to copy cursive writing. We need more classes that will teach students a skill. I am talking about from middle school up through college. Fine arts and phys ed are fine, but they really don't provide students with something they can take to a job interview.
If you want to keep art class and dodgeball, extend the school day by a couple of hours; I'm sure the parents won't complain.
