Jodorowsky Is Not Spanish

RECEIVED Tue., Jan. 6, 2009

Dear Editor,
A quote from my friend, the esteemed filmmaker, comic-book creator, composer, author, and sage Alejandro Jodorowsky, director of the cult classic El Topo:
"My parents were Russian … I was born in Chile … the Chilean children didn't accept me because I was 'Russian' … because I was a 'Jew'… the French didn't accept me because I was a 'Chilean' … the Mexicans didn't accept me because I was 'French' … the Americans think I am 'Mexican'… after 10 years I will move to another planet. They won't accept me because they will think I am an 'American.'"
Jodo will be thrilled to learn that he can add yet another false nationality to his résumé. According to the experts at The Austin Chronicle film desk two weeks in a row, his origins, perhaps for the first time ever, are now thought to be in Spain [Special Screenings, Film, Dec. 26].
