What Is Needed: A Sense of Proportion

RECEIVED Tue., Aug. 26, 2008

Dear Editor,
So the cop who stopped the speeding car, driven by the distraught couple trying to save their pet, is now getting death threats and hate mail. I wonder what would be said if that car had run some elderly couple off the road or maybe a busload of school kids – that the police weren’t “doing their job”? Undoubtedly there was a “good” reason why the animal was hurt, one not having to do with the negligence of the owners, I’m sure. But still, people need a sense of proportion. Wait, what am I thinking? I live in a state where it is legal to shoot someone who looks like they’re committing a crime.
