Don't Play With Gadgets When Driving

RECEIVED Thu., Nov. 1, 2007

Dear Editor,
I was saddened to read the story about the death of cyclist Vilhelm Hesness [“The Unnecessary Death of Vilhelm Hesness,” News, Nov. 2]. In addition to strictly enforcing our DUI laws, I think it is way past time to ban the use of distracting gadgets while driving. There has been at least one study indicating that fiddling with a cell phone or MP3 player or mocha or whatever is just as debilitating as drunken driving. If a person's car has no buttons to fiddle with, and they do not use a cell phone while driving, perhaps they should get a discount on their car insurance.
Regards,
Phil Hallmark
