It Takes More Than a Coat of Paint …

RECEIVED Sat., Sept. 29, 2007

Dear Editor,
I missed the original posting about the "falling girl" graffiti in the Sept. 21 edition but saw the letter lamenting her loss [“Postmarks,” Sept. 28], so I looked online at the original “Naked City” article. My dates may be off a bit, but I'll let you in on something: The whole series was already painted over (sometime in the Nineties?), only to re-emerge after the paint began to fade.
I was thrilled to see her jaunty – albeit, a little morbid – image slowly reappear, like a ghost from the past. Since it was originally painted in the mid-Eighties, it has been the source of a smile and snicker every time I drive down Guadalupe. I remember thinking it should have been painted on the bank garage farther down Guadalupe that was then called MBank – because of all the bank turmoil in the Eighties and their "momentum" tagline.
So, fret not. She may be hidden for a while, but we may be lucky and see her emerge, yet again, to continue her fall.
It takes more than a coat of paint to remove Austin's weirdness … thankfully.
